Catch the Light — Why does light bounce off a mirror at the same angle it hits?

Light bounces off a mirror at the same angle it arrives — the law of reflection — so to send a beam somewhere you do not point the mirror at it, you tilt the mirror halfway between the light and the target and aim the bounce. Your little sister has hurt her ankle on a darkening hillside and the rescue hut is across the valley with the last of the sun on its window; all you have is a small mirror. Tilt it to land the beam on the hut's glass, then send the light around a corner with a two-mirror periscope, and meet the rule behind every mirror, periscope and pool-table bank shot: the angle it comes in is the angle it goes out, always.
