The Ring of Names — How did we learn to read Egyptian hieroglyphs?

Egyptian hieroglyphs sat unreadable for fourteen hundred years because everybody assumed the pictures were pictures. They are not - many of them are sounds, exactly like letters. You are Jean-Francois Champollion, who promised at eleven years old that he would read them. Crack open the ring drawn around a king's name on the Rosetta Stone, carry those sounds across to a second ring and earn three more, spell out RAMSES the way he did on the morning of 14 September 1822 - and then cut your own name into a cartouche the way a scribe would have.
