Exams on Chromebook without AI cheating

Short answer

Run the exam in kiosk mode on the school's managed Chromebooks: no tabs, no other apps and no AI chat, only the exam. No technology stops all cheating, so let the teacher see the class while the exam runs.

Digital exams in locked mode

Four ways to take an exam on a computer. Only one of them closes everything else.

Ordinary browser
Everything is openAn AI chat is one tab away.
Locked form

Chrome extension
Locks the browserOther apps on the computer can still be opened.
Kiosk mode
Only the examNo tabs, no other apps, no files. Starts from the sign-in screen.

How to set up kiosk mode. Once, for every exam.

  1. Managed ChromebooksKiosk mode needs managed devices with the Chrome Education Upgrade licence. That holds for every exam tool.
  2. Add the exam app as a kiosk app in Google AdminIT does it once, for the organisational units where pupils take exams.
  3. Tell pupils to sign outKiosk mode starts from the Chromebook's sign-in screen. The pupil picks the exam app and signs in there with the school account.
  4. Follow the class while they writeSee who is at the exam computer, how far each pupil has come, and what happens along the way.
